MY FIRST CAPRI AND GEORGES CLASSIC - Beaulieu Ford Day 1996
What do you remember most about the Sixties?
The Beatles, girls in mini-skirts, the cars?
Me, I remember them all!!

I still love to listen to The Beatles, the mini-skirts well...... the cars however, well I now get to drive them as well as look at them. The cars that always caught my eye were the British cars with the American styling. My elder brother at one time had a Vauxhall Victor, and he had friends with Cresta's and Ford Consul's, but it became very frustrating not being able to go in them much, even more-so not being old enough to drive them. Travelling in my dads Austin A40 Devon didn't really make up for it, so I had to make do with the Dinky and Corgi models of my favourites (things haven't changed much!!).

ME WITH BOTH CAPRIS - Southsea Common 1997
Those sort of memories seem to stick though, at least they did with me. So after spending most of the Seventies and Eighties with various other interests (the mind boggles), in 1993 I had the urge to invest in a 60's car. After looking at various Mk.1 Cortinas, I eventually dragged a 1963 Ford Consul Capri (SFL 254) back from Lincolnshire for £1000 and so the hobby began.
I used the car daily as well as for shows. The nostalgic feeling was terrific with people watching wherever I drove it.
I'm not at all mechanically minded, myself much preferring to keep the car looking pretty and posing in it rather than fixing it (each to our own), so I left that to the experts which proved rather costly as the car was pretty rotten. Well worth it though!
I soon met up with George Steel who then had a white Ford Classic (the Capri's sister model - pictured top) and going to car shows soon became a weekly event for us, together with members of the now disbanded SAD CRUISERS from Southampton whom we joined up with.

Early in 1997 I was offered another Consul Capri and jumped at the chance as it had previously been restored and was solid throughout. This Capri (291 EGN) had originated from the Cornwall area and was bright red with red/white interior. I got it for £2,500. So I decided to keep that one for the shows and cruise nights and the other one for daily use.

So we're almost up to date now. I decided to let the first Capri go early in 1999 (it was 99% rust by then) and I had an engine rebuild / unleaded convertion in the red one.

We still do plenty of shows and cruises in the summer, plus I've even won a few trophy's with this car. So I suppose I'm making up for my childhood now - driving a 60's car with The Beatles blaring out of it.
As for the girls in mini-skirts? Well.....
